Safeway defines the next generation in offshore access solutions. Highly innovative, based on proven technology and extensively tested, this motion compensated gangway system allows year round access to a broad range of offshore installations. Safeway offers efficient and reliable solutions for the offshore wind industry.
10 m vertical height adjustment
Roll compensating mast (patent pending)
Unsurpassed workability at higher elevations
Wave heights up to Hs = 3.5 m
Conditioned cabin & sheltered passage
Meet the new standard in the Walk to Work market. The Safeway gangway has proven itself safe during transfers in Taiwanese winter at 32 meter landing heights. Enjoy speedy transfers of people and cargo combined with the freedom to transfer anywhere and anytime. User cases have shown a 40% decrease in overall job completion time.
The workability parameters of the Safeway system are based on the motions of a generic 75-metre long Platform Supply Vessel hull, operating in 3.5-metre significant wave heights with the gangway bridge positioned at any location on the ship’s deck. The Safeway can handle ship motions resulting from the largest waves.
Thanks to several smart innovations, Safeway offers substantial safety improvements for offshore workers. Vertical height adjustment for horizontal crossings. Hover mode for intrinsic safe transfers. Roll compensation to reduce compensation movements by 70%. Enclosed walkway and operator cabin for safe operations in any season and any temperature.
Once deployed Safeway can maintain position without physically connecting to an offshore structure. This reduces the total people transfer time and allows landing at random and unprepared locations.
The addition roll compensation actuator eliminate limiting gangway motions in elevated positions. This innovation provides a spectacular improvement for both workability and safety margins.
The Safeway Seagull comes with an integrated vertical elevation feature allowing level offshore access at all sites. The fully enclosed bridge and air conditioned cabin provide comfort under all conditions. Unique roll motion compensator provides highest personnel transfer rate in the market. Zero impact bumper maintains stationary position without physically connecting to an offshore installation. High speed people transfer through continuous access routing. Hassle free cargo handling at gangway tip.Request quote
The Safeway motion compensated gangway system is designed and classed under Bureau Veritas Rules. The gangway design process followed and documented in accordance with DNV’s RP-A203 guidelines. The assured performance is focussed on safety. Not limited to the control system but also considered the consciousness of safety of users. The reduced gangway motions, shelter against wind and rain, proper lighting are all contributing to the well-being of offshore personnel.Request quote

Safeway has a large pool of qualified operators available to be deployed worldwide. The operators have successfully completed the in-house training and examined by an independent 3rd party.
The training is developed in close corporation with independent certification company STC KNRM. The examiners are independent and follow preset programs.
COO - Dong Fang Offshore
“The main reason why we selected the Safeway Seagull system for our first vessel and the first Taiwanese Walk-to-Work vessel is because one we understood from a technical perspective we were able to achieve a very high workability.”
“The Safeway gangway really gives us access to offshore platforms when other means might not be able to give us 24 hours a day. It gives us access to go into turnaround. It gives us access to platforms to allow extra personnel to come out.”
During a job anything can happen, our 24/7 emergency hotline is available for immediate assistance. The experienced technicians will support you directly and locally. Spare parts are available for direct exchange. We will break through closed doors to get the problems solved, directly.
How can we help you?
Below you’ll find answers to the questions we get asked the most about Safeway Seagull.
The asset management tasks of the rental fleet units are part of Safeway’s internal scope. Every unit will be delivered fit-for-purpose. Safeway has a3-tier system in place to assure the system’s availability. 1-tier is the operator onboard, knowledgeable on hydraulic and electric systems. Operator is responsible for daily maintenance and inspections. In case of a failure the operator will perform the fault finding exercise.
The Safeway Seagull is developed for easy retrofitting on existing ships. Safeway operates a rental fleet of 8 units for spot market walk-to-work jobs. For long-term requirements Safeway is willing to consider the sale of a Safeway Seagull system. Safeway Osprey and Safeway E-Gannet type of gangways are more permanently installed units which are exclusively for sale.
Safeway has a Service Level Agreement (SLA) in place which establishes the operational tasks the client want to outsource. This may cover periodically inspections, stock keeping of parts and components, 24/7service desk with remote access, operational performance reporting and 5-yearly survey (Class requirement).
Safeway gangway is the only system in the market that can compensate all 6 degrees of freedom of the vessel. Through Safeway’s unique hover mode no external force is required to maintain the gangway tip in the right position. The Safeway Seagull operates with 4 actuators; luffing, slewing, telescoping and roll compensation.
Vessel roll motions are compensated by telescoping motions in the gangway. Telescoping also compensates the vessel DP footprint. This is the most limiting actuator of the gangway with its maximum stroke length. Higher landing points will see larger translations so commonly workability reduces with higher gangway elevations. By compensating the roll, the Safeway workability remains the same, irrespective of the landingheight.
Safeway has developed the Safeway Gannet type purposely for use of trolleys. The demand for trolleys is driven by the offshore renewable market and the Safeway Gannet is dedicated to the SOV newbuilt market. TheSafeway Gannet is derived from the Safeway Seagull, but with a single access deck. In its lowest parking position up to 5 trolleys can enter from the elevator and once in position at the turbine deployed through the gangway. The Safeway E-Gannet acts as an access elevator.
Since 2017 Safeway has performed over 200.000 safe transfers worldwide. The system is capable of transferring 200 persons in 16 minutes, so the actual number of transfers is largely impacted by specific characterisation of the job.
The flexibility of the Safeway gangway system to serve a wide range of prepared and unprepared landing locations combined with the client orientated and flexible service approach of the Van Aalst Group.
At Safeway we use a standard grillage made of H-beams which transfers operational loads into the ship structure. The gangway footprint is approx. 5,5 x 6 mand the grillage is slightly larger to cover sufficient web frames underneath. The grillage is welded on deck and the Safeway Seagull is bolted onto the grillage. Within one day the installation can be done(Plug & Play on pre-installed grillage).
